There was a Canadian, too, who’d left a £2 a day job in Toronto, a wife and three kids to join up and fight for the old country. He was a pet – and when I got up, he said, ‘Well, I guess I’m sorry you’re goin’. I was jus’ gettin’ to like yer.’ It would take an Englishman three years of seeing you every day before he’d say something like that.
